"No donation is too small" - Vice President
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is one of the most prevalent genetically transmitted diseases. Yet, it is the least studied and researched. In 1974, a federal regulation required that all newborns of color test for SCD. In 2006, 32 years later, all states complied with the regulations; leaving a 48-year gap in testing. A sizable portion of this population does not know their sickle cell status. Left undetected and untreated, SCD can lead to severe health problems and death. An adult with the sickle cell trait (SCT) needs to be genetically aware of the challenges regarding transmission of the gene. The reasons for a normal cell to become “Sickled” is very well known. There is a small amount of research that explains the medical pathogenesis of the disease. But the oral and dental manifestations of the disease have been sorely neglected.
